National magazine Travel + Leisure recently named Sanibel Island on its list of 10 of the most charming small towns in all of Florida.

"What they lack in size, they make up for in quaint shops, tasty restaurants, easygoing vibes, and enough water and land activities to keep visitors occupied and happy," the article says about the towns on its list.

Also making the list were Palm Beach, Anna Maria Island, Cedar Key, Mount Dora, Florida Keys, Micanopy, Cypress Gardens, Cape Canaveral, and Fernandina Beach. Each town, including Sanibel, has 15,000 or fewer residents—Sanibel currently has fewer than 7,500 residents and is the only representative of Southwest Florida on the list.

"Sanibel, located on Sanibel Island in southwest Florida, is known for its picture-perfect Gulf beaches that are a sheller's paradise," the article says. "And there's good reason for its reputation: It's one of the few islands that runs perpendicular to Florida's coastline (most run parallel), so the shells that wash ashore here are truly one of a kind."
