Unforgettable Animals At The Zoo!
Jul 07, 2025 08:00AM ● By Ann Marie O’PhelanFor those who haven’t been to Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens lately, there are a few new additions to see—Izel the Capybara, who loves his pool and snacks, and Manu, the Toucan, who is getting used to his new home and is quite curious about his new surroundings.
What else is new is the streamlined entrance and visitor complex, where a flock of flamingos will welcome you!
“Once inside, stroll along the newly constructed Alligator Bay Boardwalk, then explore the South American Trail, which showcases new species such as tapirs and, of course, our toucan and capybara! If you haven’t met our family of orangutans yet, you won’t want to miss them,” explains Director of Public Relations and Marketing Courtney Jolly.
What’s also enjoyable is the long-time favorites like the Primate Expedition Cruise, Meet-The-Keeper Talks, and Animal Encounters with animals like giant tortoises. The Zoo is set inside of the gardens, so the surroundings are spectacular and keep the garden cooler. If you’re staying for lunch, there are various on-site dining choices and cool treat carts.
“After your adventure, our new, more spacious wildlife-related gift shop allows you to find the perfect way to remember your day,” adds Jolly.
Plan Your Visit: Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, 1590 Goodlette-Frank Rd, Naples, 239-920-2085.
Even though the Zoo is less than an hour from Fort Myers, those who are looking for something closer can check out the animals at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, located at 3450 Ortiz, Avenue, Fort Myers, 239-275-3435.
At the Nature Center, one can check out the various rescue animals, a butterfly aviary with different species of native Florida butterflies, and where you can observe them in all stages of life—from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. There’s also a raptor aviary with eagles, vultures, hawks, and owls, nature trails that wind through the Center’s 105-acre property (come prepared for the weather and bugs as the trails can be wet during the summer months), educational events, and nature talks, and a large dome planetarium with daily shows 12:15 pm and 2:15 pm—all of which are entertaining and educational. It’s the only planetarium in Southwest Florida, and it’s fantastic to see and hear!
