Cape Coral has changed greatly in the past few years, but the city's actually evolution started much earlier. There’s no greater place to find out how other than the Cape Coral Museum of History, operated by the Cape Coral Historical Society. The museum offers archives, exhibits, and public programs where guests can learn about Cape Coral and other areas of Southwest Florida.
Starting with the early Native American tribes and working their way up to 1900s homesteaders, and ending with modern-day life in the area, including the Rosen brothers, who were the city’s early developers, the permanent displays show the evolution.
Executive Director Janel Trull explains how three buildings and outdoor gardens, including the Memorial Rose Garden, certified Butterfly Garden, and Natural Gardens, offer “many opportunities to explore.”
The Rosen Building is home to the Museum’s front desk, the Museum Store, and administrative offices. The Kelly Building’s exhibits display the growth and incorporation of the City of Cape Coral from 1970 through today. The exhibits include the formation of the city’s government, the development of public services, and the history of the local schools, parks, and more. The Gulf American Land Corp. Building offers exhibits on the Florida Calusa and Seminole tribes, homestead families, and original items from places such as Cape Coral Gardens, Cape Coral Country Club, and Cape Coral Yacht and Tennis Club. The Rose Garden is maintained by volunteers from the Garden Club of Cape Coral, and the certified Butterfly Garden and Natural Gardens are cared for by the Lee County Master Gardeners.
Guided tours and group tours are available at the Museum. Check the website for hours, admission, tours, and events throughout the year, such as the upcoming Classic Car Fest on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 10 am to 1 pm.
