We all know there are plenty of books at the library. However, there’s plenty more than paperbacks, hardcovers, newspapers, and magazines.

Lee County offers 13 public libraries, including Lakes Regional Library, North Fort Myers Public Library, and Fort Myers Regional Library, that are packed with programs, events, discussions, and, of course, plenty of books!

From children to teens to adults, there’s something for everyone. Judi Alvarado, Youth Services Programming Coordinator with the Lee County Library System, explains the library’s mission as strengthening our community by informing and enriching individuals of all ages. “When it comes to serving children and teens, we strive to promote literacy and lifelong learning for all ages through fun and engaging programs.” Because early literacy skills begin developing at birth, the library works to support parents on this journey. “Our libraries offer books and online options for children of all ages, plus providing tips and resources parents can use at home to keep the learning going, such as Storytime Anytime. We focus on early literacy programs, including Baby Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, Preschool Storytimes, and more. These free programs are offered across the library system at all our branches.

School-age children and teens can find lots of opportunities for reading, learning, and creativity. “Many of our branches offer family STEAM programs to introduce students to emerging technologies and support educational achievement throughout the year. Plus, the library’s summer reading program reinforces efforts to prevent learning loss in the summer,” adds Alvarado. For teens, there’s a special reference section at the online library. Other programs throughout the year provide children and teens with exposure to new and exciting experiences while highlighting the library as a place for connection, creativity, self-expression, and learning.

“In addition to all the amazing books, music, DVDs, and online digital resources available to all ages, our adult programming focuses on meeting the needs and interests of the community through book discussions, crafts, genealogy, games, technology assistance, author events, language classes, and more. The best part? All library programs are free,” says Alvarado.
