Before we know it, it’s back to school. However, there’s still time to enjoy family fun before the school bell rings and the homework hits.
One fun place is the Fort Myers Aquatic Center. The Center is open daily (hours vary). Although the Kiddie Pool and Slides close for the summer on August 8, there’s still a lap pool available. Elgin Hicks, the City of Fort Myers Parks & Recreation Director, explains how the Center is a fantastic destination for families to enjoy during August. “A large pool, an exciting water slide, and a fun-filled kiddie pool, offers a safe, welcoming, and refreshing environment for visitors of all ages. It’s the perfect place to cool off, create memories, and spend quality time together.” The entry fees range from $5 for adults to free for children two and under. The Aquatic Center is at 1750 Matthew Drive, Fort Myers., 239-321-7553. Check the website for details.

There’s also a chance to enjoy a Salty Sam’s Pirate Cruise. These memorable cruises allow guests to enjoy a 90-minute interactive comedy adventure as they cruise aboard the Pieces of Eight, a 65-foot replica Spanish galleon. Guests partake in many fun activities on the adventure, such as watching live cannon rounds, witnessing a mutiny against the captain, and enjoying fun nautical game and activities. It’s perfect for all ages and a great way to blast off the summer. Salty Sam’s Pirate Cruise is at 2500 Main Street, Fort Myers Beach, 239-765-7272. Check the website for details.
There’s no better way to cool down than with an Ice Cream treat. One local favorite, with several locations throughout SW Florida, including three in Fort Myers alone, is Love Boat Ice Cream. They offer over 85 flavors, like Key Lime Pie and Cookie Dough. Plus, there are low-fat and sugar-free options, along with sorbets, so there’s something for everyone.
Suppose you’re looking for a good way to beat the heat. In that case, it’s hard to beat what’s offered at the Fort Myers Regional Library or one of the other local libraries in SW Florida, such as Lakes Regional Library. There are significant events and activities, a huge collection of books and other reading materials, on-site wi-fi, public access computers, and much more. Plus, it’s a great way to prepare the school-age children for the classroom and the perfect way to enjoy a little time cooling off with the AC.
